You've probably heard of acute and chronic medical conditions, but may not know the difference. An acute disease happens suddenly, while a chronic condition often comes on gradually and persists past a few days or weeks. At Rios Healthcare Associates in Houston, TX, we often see people who are experiencing the symptoms of acute diseases and want to start feeling better. Read on to learn more about three of the most commonly diagnosed acute diseases that are treated at our clinic.

Common cold

Nearly everyone we see at our Houston clinic has experienced the sneezing, coughing, and sinus drainage of the common cold. This viral infection of the upper respiratory system is passed from person to person when someone carrying the virus coughs or sneezes, sending germ-filled droplets through the air. Adults typically get two to three colds each year, each one lasting seven to ten days.

Influenza

Contrary to what many people think, the flu is not typically associated with vomiting or diarrhea. Those symptoms are often part of the viral infection known as gastroenteritis and will be addressed below. Instead, influenza is another common acute disease that affects the upper respiratory system. While the symptoms are often similar to that of a cold, they are typically more severe and cause a person to feel very weak and tired. Many strains of the flu can be prevented or their effects lessened with a vaccination

Gastroenteritis

This unpleasant acute disease is caused by hardy viruses that affect the digestive system, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle aches. Most cases of gastroenteritis, often called the "stomach flu" or the "stomach bug," are caused by noroviruses, which can be picked up just about anywhere. Large outbreaks of gastroenteritis are common in close quarters, such as childcare centers or cruise ships. Symptoms of gastroenteritis typically resolve within one to three days, although many people still feel unwell for several days afterward.
